About us who – The travelers
We were 8 travelers(4 retired elderly couple) who visited Finland in this tour. We all are from Australia and were looking for the reliable travel agency who could prepare itinerary as per our needs. Our first initial preference was to travel in a group as usually senior citizens do. However things changed later and we decided to do a private tour specially designed for us 8 instead of visiting in a fixed group departure bus tour.
When we thought of visiting Finland, we were not even aware that we could do private tours, as most of the agencies in Australia run their group departures and we were prepared for that. It was then my daughter who did her google research and landed on to finlandtour.fi page. She then shared the details with me and i contacted the agency. Tamara sent me an email as well as connected on whatsapp and then the itinerary designing started for us.
Our 8 night / 9 Day itinerary & its preparation
We knew we have 9 days to spend exploring northern lights in Lapland, but we were not able to get proper itinerary that suits elderly style. I mean, we all might be above 60’s but we all are physically ok. We also were aware that weather may prove to be a bit harsh for us. Considering these factors, we understood :
- We need the itinerary to be Customized by an expert
- The physical exertion should match our capability
- We need to be fully prepared to deal with winters
Here, Tamara played an amazing role for us. This personalized service was not expected and we all agreed now that we were blessed to have Tamara as our travel executive.
She literally prepared the itinerary which suits best for us, be it choosing hotels, activities, locations and all other aspects. Here is the itinerary we went with, for our Finland tour:
Day 1: 8 March: We arrived Helsinki from where we were picked and dropped to Helsinki central hotel in our Luxury mini van. Our flight was too long so we decided to keep rest on this day. Our hotel was exactly in the city centre just near The Finnish National Theater, Ateneum Art Museum, University of Helsinki & Esplanade Park. We went these places walking in the evening.
Day 2: 9 March: We had our breakfast in the hotel and around 9:00 am came our van for our Porvoo village. It was beautiful without a doubt. Felt like a place from another world. Porvoo is Finland’s second-oldest city, located on the southern coast about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Helsinki. Oh what beautiful wooden houses, riverside colored cottages, everything was mind blowing. We went back to Helsinki in the afternoon around 16:00, took rest and these guys offered us complementary Sauna which was cherry on the top.
Day 3: 10 March: After breakfast we checked out of the hotel and started our journey to Lapland. Now there was a catch, out flight from Helsinki is to Norwegian Lapland city, Kirkenes. Kirkenes in Norway is famous for King crab hunt safari. You hunt a crab on snowmobiles, learn to cook them in Sami style and eat that in a restaurant. This day we arrived Kirkenes around noon, checked in to Snow hotel and enjoyed crab Safari in evening. I must say this was the only hectic day of the itinerary, but was worth evert penny.

Day 4: 11 march: I must say, Snow hotel’s breakfast was most amazing, it had multiple options as per our preferred taste. We checkout out and started our Journey to Finnish Lapland’s Saariselka village. It was an Igloo arranged for us there in northern lights village resort Saariselka. It took us around 5 hours from Kirkenes to arrive Saariselka and we were tired. We slept once we checked into the resort. Evening they had arranged northern lights hunt for us in mini bus. Unfortunately, we didn’t succeed. Dinner was included in stay and it was good.
Day 5: 12 march: We had an amazing breakfast, and around noon it was snoemobile Safari arranged for us. It was thrilling, initially we were hesitating to drive, but once our hands got set, we started enjoying it more. It was 2 hours exploring wilderness.Rest of the day, we wanted to have rest and these experienced designers already knew that, they prepared our itinerary accordingly. It is because they knew that at this point, most people oldies like us would need rest.
Day 6: 13 march: After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and started our 3 hours journey to Rovaniemi. The beauty of this region of Lapland is impeccable but it is important to do these road journeys. Tamara told us the same when we were planning and it was absolutely correct. We arrived Rovaniemi, had rest and in evening we hunted northern lights on reindeer sleighs. These reindeers were lucky for us, and we finally witnessed northern lights on the sixth day of our tour.
Day 7: 14 march: We had breakfast and were dropped to Santa Claus village. Here we met Santa, crossed arctic circle, did Husky sleigh ride for 2 kms and had amazing meals at Santamus restaurant. Around afternoon we were back and took rest for evening.

Day 8: 15 march: One of the couples in our group was particularly keen to visit the Gold Panning Museum in Tankavaara, a small village near Rovaniemi. It turned out to be a light, fun, and unique activity for all of us. We even got the chance to try gold panning ourselves, and a few lucky members of our group managed to find tiny particles of gold during the experience! We went back in afternoon and explored the Rovaniemi city’s vibe.
Day 9: 16 march: It was the last day for us. Tamara specially came to meet us in hotel, discussed about what we liked and what not. We felt so overwhelmed about it. Finally we were dropped to Rovaniemi airport from where we started our journey to Reykjavik.
